We’re making great progress on #2’s room.  Uncle Dick came up yesterday and helped us out A TON by putting texture on the walls in both #2’s room and the walls of the stairs going to the basement.  It was a messy, nasty, job and it turned out GREAT!  The stairs were a pain in the rump, but after lots of touch-up with a brush, the walls turned out really good.

Next step… paint!

So, we started working on #2’s room yesterday.  We ripped up the carpet, pulled off the trim and tore the drywall off of the south wall… all before 11am!  Needless to say, we’re happy with the progress.

Why are we pulling the drywall off, you ask?  Well, that room (SW corner of the house) has always been the coldest room in the house.  The rest of the house isn’t too bad, but not ideal.  The outside walls are always cold in the winter, which we chalked up to poor insulation.  The house was built in 1971 and there are plenty of signs where they cut corners to save some coin.

So, now that we’ve started on that room, we decided to cut a little hole in the wall to get a peak at the insulation.  The first hole I cut didn’t give us much to go on, other than there was a large space between the drywall and the insulation… not ideal.  So, I went up the wall about 24″ and cut another hole.  I was VERY lucky to expose the R value of the insulation.  It is a paltry R-7!!!  Yes, R-7!!!  For those of you not in the know of insulation ratings, the 1 1/4″ of foam sheets they put on our house before putting on the siding was rated a R-4!!!

After getting a look at that, we decided to pull the drywall off of the outside walls and put R-17 (minimum) in.  I REALLY wish we would have pulled the backing board off of the house and put in R-17 or better when they were siding it. :/  Our siding isn’t going to be replaced for the rest of the time we own this place.  I don’t plan on performing this kind of surgery on every room anytime soon.

We were at Mom & Dad’s place in Lake Mills last weekend and saw that their neighbors had installed a solar powered motion light over their deck.  Perfect!  We’ve been wanting to install a motion light over the garage door for over a year now.  The problem is, there is no power there and getting power there will be a pain in the rumpus!!!  We ran to Menards last week and found the same light they installed and picked it up.  I just installed it today and am anxious to test it out tonight!

Dad (Ray) is coming over tomorrow to help us with the bed some more.  We’re hoping to start working on the front of it (drawers) and possibly the shelves.  I’m glad he is coming, because he has the blue-print, in his head!  We’re both pretty tired from the picnic today so we’re not going to get much done tonight.

Tomorrow morning is going to be busy.  I’ve got to clean out the garage (band stuff in the way from last weekend) and the house, buy more lumber and figure out food, all before Dad shows up tomorrow morning at around 10 or 11!

Well, since before Eric was born, I have had a plan for his bedroom. And we are finally beginning to implement it! Continue reading »
